Abstract     Rationale. The aim of this study was to determine if the immune response in persons vaccinated against rabies with human diploid cell vaccine (HDCV) can be stimulated with vitamin E, given alone or together with vitamin C. Methods. The cell-mediated immunity was studied by the lymphocyte blast transformation test and the antibody titer by the indirect immunofluorescence test as well as the rapid fluorescent focus inhibition test. Results. Vitamin E had no additive effect on cell-mediated immunity when it was administrated in combination with vitamin C. Evaluation of the humoral immune response showed that vitamin E caused a marked increase in non-protecting antibodies, but had an adverse effect on the production of protecting, virus neutralizing antibodies. Conclusion. Vitamin E is not appropriate for stimulation of the immune response in persons vaccinated against rabies.
