Abstract     Regardless of its etiology, inflammatory diseases of the pancreas, acute and chronic pancreatitis, are often severe, life-threatening disease. The etiologic agents are generally known, yet the exact pathogenetic mechanism, which trigger activation of pancreatic enzymes within the gland, are still unclear. Acute pancreatitis is an acute inflammation of the pancreas, characterized by upper abdominal pain with raised concentrations of pancreatic enzymes in blood and urine. Most cases of acute pancreatitis occur in the association with gallstones and alcohol abuse. Acute pancreatitis differs from chronic pancreatitis in that it is not associated with continuing pancreatic inflammation that results in permanent and irreversible morphological changes. Chronic pancreatitis is mainly due to longstanding alcoholism. The clinical appearance of chronic pancreatitis is determined by chronic pain, steatorrhoea and eventually by the onset of diabetes mellitus.
