Abstract     Inflammation of the pancreas may have an acute or it may have a chronic progressive course. The two differ as regards the clinical picture, treatment and prognosis. The treatment of acute pancreatitis includes supportive measures and treatment of complications. It is conservative in most cases and surgical only if that proves unsuccessful. The aim of the treatment of chronic pancreatitis is to prevent exocrine and endocrine pancreatic insufficiency as well as to alleviate pain, all of which is done conservatively. The complications of chronic pancreatitis are treated surgically.
