Abstract     Secondary prevention includes identifying and treating persons with established disease and those at very high risk of developing cardiovascular disease as well as treating and rehabilitating patients who have had a heart attack or stroke. A very important part is identifying children who are at greater risk for developing infective endocarditis and giving them the proper antibiotic before the invasive procedures. Patients who had rheumatic fever must receive permanent antibiotic prophylaxis. Thrombembolic events are rare in children, but mostly the prevention of thrombosis is indicated during heart catheterization, longterm central venous or artery access, vessel implants and heart surgery. Proper physical activity plays a very important role in preventing the progression of the main disease and is at the same time very important for normal development of the child. With secondary prevention we may improve the quality of life, decrease the need for interventional procedure; such as angioplasty and bypass grafting, reduce the incidence of subsequent myocardial infarction (heart attack) and extend overall survival.
