Abstract     Workers in the Emergency Service frequently have to deal with patients who do not need any further medical care and are to be discharged, but have nowhere to go as they are homeless or live alone and are unable to fend for themselves. The duty of the Emergency Care Unit is, obviously, limited to those cases who need urgent medical attention; besides, the Unit has no beds to keep patients for any longer period. It would be desirable that the Emergency medical service had better contacts with social service, nurses visiting patients at home, centres for the homeless, the Red Cross, Caritas, as well as other humanitarian organisations which would make possible to solve the problems of such patients.
