Abstract     The objective of this research was to simultaneously compare profiles of biological and psychosocial risk factors in matched groups of atypical chest pain patients, ischaemic heart disease (IHD) patients, and controls. The results obtained showed that the atypical chest pain patients tended to be somewhere in the middle between the two comparison groups with regard to biological risk factors profile. On the other hand, they obtained higher scores on emotional lability than both IHD patients and controls. Overall, the atypical chest pain patients are characterized by a significantly increased risk of developing IHD and as such represent one of the high-priority groups for IHD prevention. The latter should be adjusted to their specific risk profile by focusing on psychological vulnerability, although at the same time not neglecting the presence of significant biological risk factors.
