Abstrakt     The article outlines the sequence of events associated with processing of the auditory stimulus - from the stage of preconscious automatic processing across the entries to the conscious perception, up to the stage of selective attention. Electrophysiological correlates of these processes are postulated as elicited by the Auditory Oddball and the Selective Auditory Attention Tasks. Characteristics of the Processing Negativity (PN) are described and possible generators of its early (modality specific) and late (hierarchically higher, frontally located) components outlined with a view of a possible clinical application of the PN in striato-frontal disorders. Our studies showed abnormalities of the PN in a range of extrapyramidal disorders, such as Parkinson's disease, Parkinsonism Plus and Gilles de la Tourette; and in a patient with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
