Abstract     The accurate determination of root canal length is a key factor in the success of endodontic therapy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the in vivo accuracy of the electronic apex locator TM/Root ZXi in 119 root canals. The accuracy of the apex locator was corroborated by radiographs. The results indicated that 105 canals, or 88.2%, appeared to be clinically acceptable radiographically, 5% were short, and 7% were overextended. There was no difference between measurements in teeth with vital tissue in the root canal system or with necrotic pulp tissue and periapical lesions. The routine use of these devices is advocated to improve the determination of root canal length.
