Abstract     The number of persons found to be infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in the world and by us is increasing. On initial presentation or in the follow-up period they may present not only with medical problems, but also have to deal with social and psychologic issues. As their disease progress these patients will need years of progressive medical care. We present a checklist and practical approach that covers the steps from history taking, physical examination, laboratory and other indicated diagnostic procedures. Accurate assessment is critical for the anticipation of prophylaxis and therapy of opportunistic infections and antiretroviral therapy.
