Abstract | Periodontal absess is an acute problem of the supporting tissues of a tooth that results in significant loss of alveolar bone and attachment tissues. Twenty-two patients aged 28-69 years, with a total of 31 periodontal abscess and a history of an moderate (three patients) to advanced (19 patients) periodontitis were included in the study. The mean observation period after active treatment of the abscess was 6.2 years (range 1-16 years).Eight (25.8%) of the 31 affected teeth were lost in the observation period. Nineteen periodontal abscesses (61%) were treated with a modified Widman flap, four (13%) with a modified Widman flap and root amputation or hemisection, three (10%) with guided tissue regeneration, one (3%) with scaling and root planing, and four (13%) with immediate extraction. A tooth with a history of periodontal abscess has significantly reduced periodontal support, but it can be treated and maintained for several years. In a female patient, we were able to follow the development of abcess by frequent measurements of initial tooth mobility, performed with an electronic device. To our knowledge a similar case of periodontal abcess formation manifested by increased tooth mobility has not been reported in the literature. | |
