Abstrakt     The chief cells (CC) are the most important element that is specific for the body gastric mucosa, and their identifi- cation aids in gastric mucosal typing, an important task in the Sidney system for classification of gastritis. We present a modified Giemsa method that differentiates the CC from the non-CC of the gastric mucosa. Two hundred and thirty-five endoscopic bioptic specimens of the body mucosa from 129 patients were stained by the hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and modified Giemsa methods. The modified Gi-emsa method stained the cytoplasm of CC an intense dark blue, whereas the cytoplasm of the antral glands, the parietal cells, and the mucous cells of the gastric pits were light blue. Out of the 235 biopsy specimens of the body mucosa, the CC were identified in 186 cases by H&E method and in 235 cases by the modified Giemsa method. Thus, in 49 (20.9%) cases, the body mucosa was identified only by the modified Giemsa method. The method enables easy determination of the type of the gastric mucosa and is most helpful when the CC are rare because of the pathologic changes or when the specimen is superficial.
