Abstract     The authors present two scoring systems, the most widely used in multidisciplinary paediatric intensive care units: PRISM (Paediatric Risk of Mortality) and PIM (Paediatric Index of Mortality). They are both based in the most abnormal values of different lists of clinical and laboratory variables and provide an excellent indicator of risk of mortality for severely ill or injuries children. The PIM scoring system is explained in detail in a severily ill child admitted to the intensive care unit due to multiple organ failure. The ratio of observed to expected mortality in 20 consecutive patients is presented.
