Abstract     The paper discusses the problems of early prehospital diagnosis and treatment of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) that the general practitioner is frequently confronted with. The stress is on 1.) the recognition of AMI, 2.) the prevention of sudden death in the early phase of AMI and 3.) on safe and rapid transport for the purpose of the earliest thrombolytic therapy and monitoring. Correct and timely treatment of AMI improves the prognosis and decreases the mortality of these patients. Effective prehospital treatment demands the following: 1) a well organized and equipped emergency service, 2) the populations full acquaintance with the problems of AIM and sudden death and 3) the greatest possible number of lay persons mastering the technique of resuscitation.
