Abstrakt     Helicopter emergency medical service is an important part of Emergency medical service (EMS) systems in most developed countries. At the moment there are only two kinds of HEMS in Slovenia: 1.In mountains and other difficult accessible sites which is performed by amateur organized Mountain Rescue Service of Slovenia (MRSS) with police and army helicopters 2. Interhospital helicopter transport by the team from Clinical Centre in Ljubljana with police helicopter. Beside this we need efficient HEMS which would be fully integrated in EMS system and would operate for all country according to internatonal standards. Till now all efforts to organize such HEMS have been unsuccessful. The article deals with arguments pro et contra these plans and with expected benefits from HEMS. With this year project of on duty HEMS group during summer months MRSS tries to improve the quality of its work. Complete team for mountain helicopter rescue (doctor, rescuer and helicopter crew) will be at the helicopter base from June to the end of September. The main goals of this project are: to shorten the response time of the team, to rationalize the use of the helicopter, to improve medical care and to give chance of use of rescue helicopter with our team to the "ground" EMS also. With this first of all we want to improve the quality of HEMS in Slovenian mountains and other difficult accessible sites, but also we hope to encourage further developement of HEMS in Slovenia.
