Abstrakt | Ethylene glycol intoxication is a rare but dangerous type of poisoning. It causes a severe acidosis with high anion and osmolal gaps. Clinical manifestations of the ethylene glycol intoxication can be divided in three phases: the neurological stage with hallucinations, stupor and coma; the second - cardiovascular stage with cardiac failure and the third phase characterised with renal failure due to the acute tubular necrosis. After an aggressive gastric emptying, the main treatment is ethanol, which can be given either orally or intravenously, with supportive measures for all symptoms or diseased organ. A 47-year old man ingested 0,3 I of an unknown alcohol beverage few hours before the admission to our hospital. Although his course was complicated by coma, metabolic acidosis with high anion gap and kidney failure, the patient survived. He was discharged fifteen days later with mild renal failure and anaemia with comlete nor malisation six mounths later at out patient visite. Sustained ethanol intusion and haemodialysis were instituted before obtaining the laboratory confirmation of the ingestion. | |
