Abstract     Thermal lens spectrometry belongs to the group of photo-thermal techniques, which due to its inherent high sensitivity enables detection of various pigments such as chlorophyll or various carotenoids at concentrations below 1 microgL-1. This work represents the application of the TLS detection in combination with a gradient HPLC. While gradient elution provides the required selectivity of analytical procedure, the high sensitivity of TLS detection facilitates the determination of different compounds, and adds to the accuracy of the discrimination between representative species. This fact enables the use of HPLC-TLS method for determination of carotenoids and chlorophylls in complex samples like various species of marine phytoplankton.
