Abstrakt		Diseases related to gastric acid secretion are of special importance because they are highly prevalent and have a chronic course. Lansoprazole is a drug from the group of proton pump inhibitors. It is more effective than Hz receptor blockers and, hence, shortens the duration of therapy. It has been demonstrated that the safety of short- term administration of lansoprazole is comparable to that of H2 -receptor blockers. As yet, lansoprazole has not been associated with any harmful effects during long-term treatment of patients with gastroesophageal reflex disease or Zollinger-Ellison syndrome as well. In the future, proton pump inhibitors will be used for the treatment of the majority of patients with ulcer disease, gastroesophageal reflex disease or Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
