Abstract | Fecal incontinence is the release of rectal contents against one's wishes. Defecation and the act of deferring defecation are complicated physiologic processes. The anal sphincters are just one element in this physiologic phenomenon. An understanding of how each of these physiologic variables affects continence is essential in treating patients who cannot satisfactorily defer elimination of stool or gas. A complete ring of muscle around the anus does not ensure anal continence, nor does an incomplete sphincter necessarily result in anal incontinence. Most frequently used operative procedures treating fecal incontinence are mentioned. Dietary and pharmacological therapy can also be used to improve the results of operative therapy. | |
