Abstract     In neurology a pragmatic division of mental functioning and behaviour into personality, affect/emotion and cognitive functions is useful. All these aspects of behaviour should be assessed in communication with the patient, his significant others and by examination. As far as affect is concerned several directed questions shouid be asked, histary from significant others should be taken and the patient's behaviour should be monitored. Assessment of personality (behaviour) is helped by data from significant others. Specific dysfunction related to involvement of particular brain areas (lobes) should be explored by specific manoeuvres (e.g., for assessment of functions of frontal and temporal lobes). Cognition should be assessed by specific tests and manoeuvres if affection of single functions is suspected. In assessment of possible global cognitive dysfunction (dementia) the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) is recommended, with optional additional assessment of memory, orientation, speech ... Appraisal of the examinee's handicap in functioning both at home and at the workplace will not be difficult when cognitive dysfunctions andlor personality and/or emotional disorders are prominent. In unclear situations, and when only minor disorders are suspected, the clinical (neuro)pshycologist (particularly in the case of cognitive dysfunction) or psychiatrist (particularly in the case of affect disorders) should be consulted.
