Abstract     Sterol regulatory element binding proteins (SREBP) mediate CYP51 gene expression in somatic cells, while in germ cells CYP51 gene expression is mediated by the cAMP-regulatory element modulator CREMt. We propose that the dual CYP51 gene regulation leads either to cholesterol or to synthesis of CYP51 metabolites whic are important in reproduction of mammals.
