Abstract		The article deals with specific characteristics of the elderly in the light of communication as an inherent part of nursing care. The article summarizes basic characteristics of old people and different aspects of communication. Effective comunication requires good knowledge of old people, consideration of individual differences and capacity for the establishement of genuine relationships which is one of the basic tasks of a nurse. The aim of a genuine relationship is creative problem solving and timely responsible reaction to them.
Summary		Članek obravnava posebnosti starostnika in komunikacijo kot sestavni del geriatrične zdravstvene nege. V njem so povzete osnovne značilnosti starostnika ter različni vidiki komuniciranja. Za uspešno komuniciranje je potrebno poznavanje teorije o komunikaciji, dobro poznavanje starejših ljudi z upoštevanjem individualnih razlik in sposobnost za vzpostavljanje pristnih odnosov. Bistvena naloga medicinske sestre pri delu s starostniki je ustvarjanje pozitivnega odnosa, ki je usmerjeno k ustvarjalnem reševanju težav in problemov in pravočasnemu odgovornemu odzivanju na starostnikove probleme.
