Abstract		Glucocorticoids have many therapeutic uses, including treatment of selected infectious diseases or their complications. When used for infectious diseases, the situation is usually such that an overactive immune response contributes to the pathology of the infection rather than contains it. On the other hand, a wide variety of complications can result from steroid use: decreasing of host defenses, masking of the severity of infection and predisposing for secondary infection. Because of these potential complications, the risk-benefit ratio of glucocorticoids in the treatment of infections must be weighed carefully Recommendations are given for the systemic use of glucocorticoids in the treatment of certain infections in adults.
Summary		Glukokortikosteroide uporabljamo za zdravljenje različnih bolezni, med drugim tudi za zdravljenje določenih okužb ali njihovih zapletov. Pri infekcijskih boleznih jih uporabljamo takrat, kadar prekomerni imunski odziv na okužbo več prispeva k patologiji okužbe kot k njenemu obvladovanju. Po drugi strani pa glukokortikosteroidi predstavljajo nevarnost za številne zaplete: zmanjšujejo gostiteljevo obrambno sposobnost, prikrivajo resnost okužbe in olajšajo nastanek sekundarnih okužb. Zaradi možnosti zapletov je treba vedno oceniti odnos med tveganjem in prednostjo tovrstnega zdravljenja. Podana so priporočila za sistemsko uporabo glukokortikosteroidov pri določenih okužbah pri odraslih.
