Abstrakt		Studies of Borelia burgdorferi s. l. show the etiologic agent of Lyme borreliosis to have a very complex biology. Immunological and molecular heterogeneity in isolates from Europe and USA, differences in bacterriocide in kinetics and in the effects of various antibiotics, formation of spheroplasts as well as conversion to L-forms have been clearly demonstrated. Differences in disease produced by classic vs. spheroplasts-L-forms of the same bacterial species may be explained by quantitative or even qualitative differences in their antigens. All of these facts have to be considered during the polyphase course of Lyme borreliosis, its persistance, or recurrence.
