Abstract     Background. Our intention was to analyse the most common causes of death more clearly and to establish the burden of loss on the population for some of these causes in the Maribor area in comparison with the rest of Slovenia. We also tried to recommend measures of primary and secondary prevention to improve the situation in the Maribor area. Methods. All inhabitants aged 20 years and over who died in the 19911995 period in Slovenia were included. They were divided by sex, age and the underlying cause of death (only the codes from the 2nd, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 17th group of ICD-9th revision were included). Differences in mortality rates, median at the age of death and the number of YPLL in the Maribor area and the rest of Slovenia were tested with nonparametric tests. Results. in the Maribor area, only the inhabitants aged over 64 d.ie significantly more frequently and younger than in the rest of Slovenia. The burden (number of YPLL) of coronary heart diseases, cerebrovascular diseases, other heart diseases, chronic obstructive lung diseases and other diseases of the digestive system is significantly higher (p<0.05) in the Maribor area than in the rest of Slovenia. As a result of these diseases, the inhabitants of the Maribor area die more frequently (p<0.05) and younger (p<0.05). Inhabitants aged below 65 also die more frequently and/or younger because of certain kinds of neoplasms, inflamations of the digestive system and injuries, especially suicides.
