Abstract		Replacement of a single tooth with an osseointegrated titanium implant is a valid treatment modality with aesthetic and functional advantages over the classical fixed prosthodontic and orthodontic procedures. The preservation of hard and soft tissues at the extraction site depends on the time of extraction and on the pathological process that caused it. In areas where vertical and horizontal resorption of the alveolar ridge has occurred, the lost tissue must be restored with the method of guided tissue regeneration. If an acute inflammatory process is present, the inflammation must be controlled and the lost tissues reconstructed prior to implant placement. The best aesthetic and functional results are obtained if the implant can be inserted directly after extraction.
