Abstrakt     Wise use of helicopter in emergency-medical service sistem can improve the level of prehospital treatment of victims in many cases. Helicoper rescue and emergency medical service performed in mountains and in other difficult accessible sites by Mountain Rescue Service of Slovenia (MRSS) is still the only primary helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) in Slovenia. It is performed by MRSS doctors and rescuers together with the crew of police and army helicopters. The deficiency of this activity is too long response and access times and the fact, that in Slovenia there's not even one helicopter intended, equiped and permanently attainable for EMS. With intention to improve the quality of HEMS in mountain ranges and to extend HEMS activity to other parts of Slovenia, we performed project "on duty HEMS 2000". From the 3rd of June to the 30th of September 2000, on weekends from 8.am till 8.pm, the complete team for HEMS was on duty at the Police helicopter base on Brnik airport. During this period we were able to significantly shorten the response and access times and to rationalize the use of helicopter. In the period of 36 days of on duty HEMS we performed 34 rescue missions with 37 victims. Most of missions were in mountains or other difficult accessible sites, some of them also in urban areas. With this project we reached most of our goals. We were able to prove the significance of improvement in organization of HEMS and the necessity of expanding this activity to other parts of Slovenia. In 2001 on duty HEMS will be performed in similar way with improvements, resulting from last year's experiences. We hope to establish regular daily on duty HEMS for mountains and also for other parts of Slovenia with the help from Ministry of Health.
