Abstract     Many attempts have been made to assess and quantify mortality risk in patient with community acquired pneumonia. The scoring system designed by Fine et al. has been validated in a large cohort of community acquired pneumonia patients. By assessing and allocating points to selected patient characteristics: age, coexisting illnesses, results of physical examination, and laboratory findings, patients are assigned to one of five risk categories and decision to hospitalize is based on this categorisation.
