Abstract		The importance of an infectologist depends primarily on the significance of infectology and the ability of society, medicine and ourselves to recognize and endorse this importance appropriately. Present situation as well as predictions for near future for clinical work, education and research in the field of infectious diseases are outlined. There are strong indicators for an accelerating and unprecedented progress in infectology foretelling bright future for infectologists but also pointing to the necessity of hard work.
