Abstrakt		The author reports on a group of 60 children (44 girls and 16 boys) between 12 and 14 years of age who underwent fixed orthodontic treatment, followed by retention using a passive removable palatal plate. As many as 36.6% of the patients failed to complete the retention phase of the treatment. Twenty per cent dropped out after the first follow-up visit, and 16.6% gradually over the following year. The main reasons fo premature termination of the treatment were dissatisfaction with the removable plate, personality development and emotional problems typical of adolescence, inadequate motivation and lack of family support.
