Abstrakt     Cardiac cachexia is independent risk factor for mortality in chronic heart failure. Recent research has emphasized the potential importance of catabolic: anabolic hormone disturbance due to neurohormonal and immune system activation, and shift of total body substrate utilization to less energy-efficient processes in the development of cardiac cachexia and progression of heart failure. In this article the pathophysiological mechanisms of cardiac cachexia will be reviewed, and the role of (3-blockers in improvement of energy-efficiency and reduction of resting energy production rate in chronic heart failure patients will be discussed.
