Abstract		Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) represent the major burden both for the quality of life with regard of everyday life of the population or the quality of life of the society through the burden CVD represent to the national budget. On the other hand epidemiologic studies and randomized clinical trials provide compelling evidence that coronary heart disease (CHD) is largely preventable. Epidemiological data show that the coronary heart disease mortality is continuously declining in Slovenia, in paralel with the trend of declining in the average of the countries in European Union. Anyhow trends in risk factors are not consistent with a slowing of the decline in mortality. There has been little recent progress in some, such as smoking cessation, but there are increasing levels of physical inactivity, obesity and type 2 diabetes representing the delterious and potentially very harmful consequences. Such a situation directed towards aggressive risk reduction and formation of comprehensive, integrated and nationally coordinated programmes on CVD prevention; both primary and secondary. There is considerable activity in population-wide prevention and primary prevention for high risk people going on during last three years, resulted in establishment of comprehensive National Primary CVD Prevention Project started officially in October 2001. Secondary prevention is quite less well organized and the wide disparities exist especially among different regions in Slovenia, pointing to major gap in efforts to use available, proven approaches to control CVD. There is an urgent need for the creation, consensual professional approval, establishment and implementation of evidence based comprehensive, integrated National Programme on Secondary CVD Prevention in our country.
