Abstrakt     Different interactions can occur between drugs and food. Some of these interactions are not clinically significant, whereas others may be fatal. Pharmacokinetic interactions may appear in all phases from the application of drug delivery system to the drug elimination. Dissolution, absorption and presystemic metabolism are the phases where food exihibits most effects. The changes in drug bioavailability are most frequently a consequence of food influence on gastric emptying and pH, on different secretions and on splanchic blood flow. Direct interactions between food components and drugs may also appear, or both, food components and drugs may be involved in the same biochemical or physiological processes. The described influences may result in changed absorption rate and /or extent, but it is also possible that food has no effect on drug bioavailability. Food / drug interactions cannot be predicted with certainty in advance, so the dosing regimen regarding meal intake should be determined in human pharmacokinetic studies with food for each drug and each drug delivery system.
