Abstract     Modern abutments have simplified the procedure of prosthetic rehabilitation. After placement in the oral cavity, the abutment can be adjusted to correct an unfavourable angle or direction. When the impression is taken, several intermediate procedures are no longer needed, so that the work is easier and the possibility of errors during transfer to the laboratory is reduced.Abutments for the anterior region are made of ceramic or metal. Ceramic abutments are suitable for single tooth replacement, whereas metal ones are more appropriate for replacing several missing teeth. Abutments for the posterior region are cylindrical in shape with the base corresponding to the shape of the tooth. The most suitable size for each tooth must be selected. The subgingival part and the gingival step are industrially preshaped, and no corrections should be made in these areas. Although modern abutments are easier to use than classical ones, great care must be exercised during work.
