Abstrakt     Occupational therapy is an important part of rehabilitation process, equivalent to other methods of therapeutic approach. Its aim is - through specific activities - to help people reach their maximum level of function and independance in all aspects of daily life. Its approach should be individual, treating the patient as an integral personality within certain sociocultu; al background. The patient should first be assessed and his/her abilities evaluated - on the basis of interview, observation as well as specific tests and measurements. The patient should be trained to reach the maximum level of mobilization. When or if he is confined to bed, suitable bed positions are important. Later, if patient's condition permits, he is taught mobility skills: independent chair, bed and toilet transfers, sitting up in bed, sitting over the edge of bed, sitting down on a bed, using walking aids as well as a wheelchair. An occupational therapist teaches life skills, from self-maintenance activities to role duties and leisure-time pursuits. In the process of hand rehabilitation the role of occupational therapy is to activate the hand-using working aids and orthoses. Besides improving mobility, sensoric reeducation is necessary in the case of sensoric impairment. An occupational therapist is an important part of the rehabilitation team; however, its central and most important member is the patient himself.
