Abstrakt     lnterest in folk medicine gained enormous impetus in recent years by the rediscovery of the ancient Chinese practice of acupuncture, which has been in continuous practice for 2000 years. The procedure involves the insertion of fine needles through specific points at the skin. The practice of acupuncture is part of a complex, fascinating theory of medicine in which all diseases and pains are believed to be due to disharmony between Yin and Yang, which flow in channels called meridians. The discovery by physiologist in China that the nerves are essential for effective pain relief by acupuncture placed the practice on a firm scientific basis (Han, Terenius, 7982, Takagi, 7982, Nathan, 7978). The involvement of specific neurotransmitters in acupuncture analgesia was indicated in early studies carried out in China and by a large number of subsequent neuropharmocological studies reviewed by Han, Terenius, 7982, Pomeranz, 7987, Takagi, 7982. There are few controlled clinical studies on acupuncture therapy of pain relief.
