Abstract     Extracting fibres from fractographic images is based on a modified edge detection and tracing - an alternative to creating skeleton for fibre objects without defined borders. Special require-ments of fractography forced a non-standard approach to the analysis of a fibre process (system of fibres in 2D - e.g. a crack network): creating a database of its structure and a parametric model of its fibres. The database is composed of four sections - lists of objects, vertices, fibres and individual pixels. Merging fibres into long branches or objects does not require browsing. Characteristics of the process can be estimated from a parametric description of fibres with an arbitrary level of smoothing. Also properties that are not available by traditional methods can be studied. The method was fully automated and can be applied generally in the analysis of planar fibre processes, tesselations, etc.
