Abstract     Charged colloidal suspensions exhibit crystalline, liquid-like and even glass-like ordering, which have close analogy with atomic systems, under suitable conditions. Suspensions of highly charged particles exhibit a gas-solid phase separation in the form of voids (rare phase) coexisting with dense phase disordered regions. Scattering methods such as ultra-small-angle-X-ray-scattering (USAXS) technique are used to determine the structural ordering as well as the concentration (nD) of particles within the dense phase, but it is rather difficult to determine the concentration (nR), of the rare phase. In this paper we develop a methodology to estimate the void sizes and the rare phase concentration in turbid and inhomogeneous colloidal suspensions, from Confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) images.
