Abstract     The paper is concerned with the microstructure of iron after severe plastic deformation (SPD), by Equal Channel Angular Extrusion (ECA). The specimens were strained up to the total logarithmic strain eta rz = 13,8. The deformed material appeared to have a lamellar structure. The width, distance and orientation of the lamellae observed on a specimen cross-section were described using an Image Analysis system, with the aim to describe the heterogeneity of the microstructure. A correlation has been observed between the heterogeneity of the microstructure and the microhardness of the material.
