Abstract     An approach has been made to provide quantitative description of two types of gradient materials produced on a base of Armco iron. One of the materials studied had phase composition gradient introduced by means of thermo-chemical treatment, the other microstructural elements geometry and density gradient, introduced by means of mechanical and thermal treatnent, but no chemical (phase) composition gradient. The obtained results show how the microstructure changes on gradient direction. The results prove that traditional approach of computing only global parameters of microstructure in case of materials with microstructure gradient leads to, at best, incomplete description.
