Abstract		Infections are important complications of cardiac surgery. In the article some specific infections unique to cardiac surgery are described. Epidemiology, clinical picture, diagnostics and treatment of sternal wound infections, mediastinitis, early postoperative endocarditis as well as permanent pacemaker and defibrillator associated infections are described. The importance of antibiotic prophylaxis in cardiac surgery is stressed.
