Abstract     »Family could be heaven, hell, source of joy and suffering, depending on what individual family members do from it.« says E. Lukas. The birth of a child with deficiencies in mental development will bring numerous changes into the life of the child's family. While trying to accept the fact that their child is afflicted with a developmental disorder, the parents have to deal with many obstacles and difficulties. Parents' reaction depends on their personality as well as the influences coming from their social environment. While professionals working with mentally or physically handicapped children have made a conscious decision to engange in this kind of work, the parents and the broader family of an affected child have been caught in such a situation unwillingly. Collaboration between the family and therapists should enhance encouragement, support and development of the child and his personality.
