Abstract     The Functional Independence Measure (FIM) uses a 7-point ordinal scale comprising 18 items. The FIM is divided into two subscales, the 13-item motor FIM and the five-item cognitive FIM. The motor FIM consists of four motor function domains: self-care (eating, grooming, bathing, dressing upper body, dressing lowerbody, and toileting), sphincter control (bladder and bowel), mobility (transfers to bed, chair/wheelchair, toilet, and tub/shower), and locomotion (walking/ wheelchair and climbing stairs). The cognitive FIM comprises two cognitive function domains: communication (comprehension and expression) and cognition (social interaction, problem solving, and memory). Scores may range from 1 (total dependence) to 7 (complete independence), with total scores ranging between 18 and 126. The FIM asses the level of "disability" or "activity Iimitation" and not the level of "impairment".
