Abstrakt		Background: A new device for diagnostic and therapeutic puncture of body cavities is described. The principal advantages of the device are that it permits to locat the cavity wall with the blunt needle and elimination of the need to introduce the sharp tip into the body cavity, thereby minimizing the risk of injury to intracavity structures. Methods: The device is made up of two needles, one with a blunttip lying within the other one with a sharp tip. The skin is pierced with the sharp tip; the underlying tissues are penetrated with the blunt tip, advanced telescopically through the sharp needle. Results and conclusions: The technigue of thoracentesis with the new device is described and the results obtained from a small clinical series of 18 patients are presented. The method is diagnostically adeguate, therapeutically effecitve, safe, simple and guick. With the new device puncture of all body cavities is possible.
