Abstrakt     Gene expression profiles were determined in mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC), acinic cell carcinoma (ACC), salivary duct carcinoma (SDC), and adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) of salivary gland, using cDNA arrays representing 1176 cancer-related human genes. Findings were validated by quantitative RT-PCR. Only five genes (FNl, TIMPI, BGN, HXB, and IGFBPS) were overexpressed in all carcinoma types, and sixteen genes including MADH4/ SMAD4 and CREBBP were underexpressed in all types. In hierarchical clustering, gene expression profiles were separated into MEC and ACC/SDC groups. In significance analysis of microarrays (SAM), forty-three genes were significantly differently expressed between the groups including IL-6, CASP10, and KRT14. The small number of jointly deregulated cancer-related genes suggests a significant heterogeneity in pathogenetic mechanisms of major types of salivary gland carcinoma. Gene profiles of salivary gland carcinoma and database records on pancreatic carcinoma show similarities in growth control-related gene derangement. Genes selected by SAM might prove useful as tools in differential diagnosis.
