Abstrakt     This article begins with a description of assertive behavior, as well as a description of characteristics of clients who might benefit from the training. Several variations of assertiveness training have been developed in the last 20 years. The classic approach is based on imitation of models and was constructed by A. Bandura on the basis of social learning principles. The most important features of these principles, which should be taken into account while planning an assertiveness training program, are outlined. A more recent approach, called covert modeling, is presented next. Instead of the use of five or pre-recorded models, the client himself is instructed to produce models in his imagination. As a rule, this approach is suitable for people with lesser deficits. Some specific situations, which are typicaly used in the framework of this approach, are described in some detail. For people with more pronounced deficiencies (for example, psychiatric patients) a less demanding version is usually used. One such version is also described. In the last part, some suggestions for modification of non-verbal behavior are given. A special emphasis is put on the selection of non-verbal components to be modified. They are those, which are, on the hand, the most important ones for successful communication, and at the same time, the ones that can be easily observed and defined.
