Abstrakt     Background. Histopathological analysis of tumors of the gallbladder and extrahepatic bile ducts is known as diagnostic standard since microscopic investigation enables a detailed classification of neoplasia, so as its invasive and metastatic growth. Histopathological diagnosis provides clinically useful, important information for physicians. Aims, material, results. Histomorphological characteristics of surgically removed tumors and tumorlike changes in the mucosa of the gallbladder and bile ducts are described. According to histologic arrangements proposed by international medical organizations they are classified into two main groups, i.e. benign and malignant. We emphasize the origin of these malignant growths from preceeding premalignant lesions such as hyperplasia, metaplasia and dysplasia. So as histopathological detection of these changes in inflammed tissue is a relevant prognostic information, surgical removal of these lesions is prognostically good for the patient. Conclusion. Prognostic information about malignant tumors of the gallbladder and bile ducts proceeds from histopathologic grade of neoplasia comprising tumorous differentiation and growth pattern, and from the stage of the disease including neural and vascular invasion lymphnode involvement and distant metastasis. More frequent clinical control of patients with premalignant lesions is also established by histomorphological detection of tumorous precursor changes in specimens obtained by surgical procedures.
