Abstrakt		Successful treatment of chronic wounds requires knowledge and understanding of the various pathophysiological mechanisms that impair the healing process. Wound infection is considered to be one of the local intrinsic factors that interfere with healing and cause additional damage to surrounding tissues. An infected wound does not heal unless the infection is cured. The decision to use surgical and/or antibiotic treatment is influenced by the evaluation of local and systemic signs or symptoms of infection. Aside from antibiotics, surgical procedures, whereby the wound is cleaned thoroughly and the conditions for definitive healing are created, play a leading role in the treatment. Measures for the prevention of infection contribute to more sensible use of basic systemic antibiotics. Rational use of antibiotics can prevent the spread of infection and the development of resistant bacterial strains.
