Abstrakt     Technologies that were hardly used ten years ago, such as the Internet, e-mail, and video teleconferencing are becoming methods for communication in medicine. Virtual reality (VR) is one of the new technologies as well. It is not only a communication but also offers personal experience in diagnostic procedures and therapy. VR is a communication interface based on interactive 3D visualization, able to collect and integrate in single real-like experience different inputs and data sets. VR is computer generated environment which simulates natural sensual experience and offers to the user manipulation of data sets by visual, tactile and other sensations. The first health care applications of VR started in the early '90s with the need for medical staff to visualize complex medical data, particularly during surgery and for surgery planning. A couple of years later, the scope of VR applications in medicine has broadened to education in surgery and direct use during surgery and endoscopy. Very important field is use of VR in neuropsychological assessment and physical rehabilitation. This paper intends to give an overview of the role of VR in medicine, especially in surgery. The computer program Liver is presented. The program is a work of our group and presents 3D liver in VR for studying liver anatomy and for planning diagnostic procedures and liver surgery.
