Abstrakt		The treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD) must be based on an initial assessment of disease history. extent and severity, including assessment of psychological distress and impact on the familly. The physician-patient communication is of utmost importance to secure compliance with treatment. Management comprises a disease adapted treatment combining skin protection and if needed antiinflammatory measures and the identification and avoidance of trigger factor. Treatment currently focuses on skin hydration and reduction of pruritus. There is a need for an effective and safe therapy for early control and long term maintenance of AD, irrespective of the age of the patient. The new class of topical calcineurin inhibitors may fulfil this unmet need by providing a safe and effective option for the long term control of AD.
