Abstrakt     Public health practice is not in the exclusive domain of a single type of organisation or profession. In Slovenia the National Institute of Public Health and the regional institutes of public health perform the majority of activities in this field. By adapting to specific needs of local communities, public health institutes became very heterogeneous and have proven remarkably adaptable and responsive to the changes in the environment. Similarly as in almost all Eastern European countries, restructuring of public health services to allow them to respond to the complex challenges in the field of public health in the future is urgently needed in Slovenia. The reorganisation of these institutes is required also to achieve more effective use of available resources and to attain higher quality outputs. There is a great variability in public health structure and functions in different countries. None of these models can be used directly for reorganisation in Slovenia. However, an overview of the general characteristics of institutes of public health in some European countries can guide us in considering different possible approaches with the aim to propose the most appropriate organisational infrastructure for the new public health concept in Slovenia. Even though the institutes of public health in Slovenia are public institutes, they often function as an enterprise firm. They have to gain more than three quarters of their revenue on the market. Unfortunately, as a consequence, the basic public health activities were often put aside. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
